All the way to Estonia and the groundhopping is confirmed to a grand tour of the A. Le Coq Arenal and its environs? Well technically this Estonian Second game was played at the Sportland Arenal but within the shadow of the main stadium, an Astroturf pitch but with a handy stand for the hardy band of supporters, today boosted to 20 by a quartet of English supporters. By half-time that quartet had become a duo as a pair of befuddled coots headed in the direction of a nearby bar for liquid refuelling, the unrelenting sun fevering their brows. Perhaps this uncommonly warm weather had stupefied the participants for despite honest endeavour, rarely was a goal threatened. A cursory glance at the table gave the reason, hosts Elva lay rock bottom with 8 points from 18 games having scored a mere 6 times in the league season, 270 minutes per goal! Immediately above them lay Välk 494, 21 goals in 19 games. The portents were not good nor were they proved wrong!
Young Elva prospected most in attack but finishing was woeful. The visitors, from Estonia’s second city and intellectual capital, offered little and stalemate seemed a certainty. Then just as the imbibers returned from their hostelry, the net rippled as Tartu’s Idavain found the net with a strong header at a corner. 70 minutes of warm weather tedium had elapsed. Elva tried to find a route back, threatened much but finished less, Siim Säesk in the Välk net finally tested but not found wanting. The final whistle was a blessed relief!
